This was without a doubt one of the coolest days we have ever had in Japan, hands down. We saw a freaking volcano erupt! Sakurajima is almost a mystical place, an active volcano centred in a bay that the entire prefecture of Kagoshima wraps around. The island is far from modern Japan, but just a quick ferry ride from Kagoshima City, so if you ever make it down there don't miss a day on Sakurajima itself. It's one of our favorite places on the planet.
The power of the earth is astounding. Two meters of this tori are burried in ash.
